e-ETHEL2This is one of those things where I’ve loved ETHEL since being a composer was just a twinkle in my heart’s eye, so getting a Homebaked commission from them was pretty much a dream come true. They’re been playing it around in different venues (for the National Sawdust show it was especially fun to have a video element for the piece!) but it premiered on a whole concert of Homebaked goods early in 2014. (as soon as they came out of the oven).

The piece I wrote for them is part of my Portrait Pieces project.  Jascha came with me and recorded conversations I had with the group as well as a bunch with folks who have worked with them over the years.  I made a collage of those recordings (along with some snippets of their lovely singing!) to create a tape track that they play along with during the piece.  It’s my hope with this project that audiences will get a direct feel for the personalities of these fabulous performers, even past the style of their playing.  You can see a fun preview we made for the premiere on vimeo:

The other composers who have done Homebaked pieces are Andy Akiho, Anna Clyne, Hannis Brown, Dan Friel, Matt Marks, Ulysses Owens Jr., and Judd Greenstein.  Stay tuned for exact date and locale of ETHEL’s next Pirate’s Daughter performance…
